Dear ISC,
Attached please find location list of our Lubin events for Oct-Dec 2007.
Comments to this are the following:
1. Locations are taken from the mines, recalculated into geographical
coordinates.
Locations given with three decimal digits are calculated and should be accurate
to within 200 meters. Locations given with two decimal digits are estimated
- usually from the place that damage occurred. This location may differ from
true origin by up to 1 km, although usually not more than 500 m.
2. Origin times given with 0.1 s accuracy are recalculated from arrival time at
KSP, using formula DISTANCE[km]/5.950[km/s]. Distance is calculated from
the known location and the KSP station coordinates. Origin times with 1 s
accuracy
are when the mines provided only estimated source locations (see 1. above) and
it is therefore not possible to calculate exact distance. The velocity seems
anomalously high for 65-90 km distance, nevertheless what results from our
S-P is still greater, 6.050 km/s - if we follow the rule Vp/Vs=1.73.
3. Magnitudes are Mw calculated from KSP records. Somehow KSP has a
natural tendency to underestimate all magnitudes by about 0.2 unit - most likely
a site effect. Possibly this is because of recording 44 m underground and the
free surface effect at frequencies of local evants does not fully hold.
I have another subcomment to that. As a matter of fact, the KSP staff when
doing magnitude calculation should define frequency range in the spectral domain
so that computer program makes an appropriate fit. This is to be done manually
after seeing the spectrum - picking by eye the part of the spectrum that is
regular.
However, in this case routine seems to prevail over common sense and the staff
usually keeps the spectral range constant from 1.0 to 8.0 Hz. This is good for
most mid-sized events, but small events have a noise component in the low
frequency part and thus their magnitudes come out overestimated. Contrarily,
the biggest events have frequency components outside the range in the low
frequency part and as result their magnitudes come out underestimated.
4. Format of the attached file is theoretically constant but it may change
without
warning anytime. Exact format depends on a template file on a PC computer
and it is possible to mess around with the template. In particular, the number
of header lines and number of space and/or tabulator characters between the
entries may vary.
5. I cannot assure providing the file every quarter of the year. E.g. for
July-September
I have received only a printed version of the file (on paper).
6. I do not receive similar data for Upper Silesia. Upper Silesian locations are
sent to the ISC only in our final local event reports sent to the ISC by our
Bulletin
Section.
Best regards,
Pawel
