SEISMIC ALERT: BROMYARD, HEREFORDSHIRE 18:06 UTC 26 OCTOBER 2008 3.6 ML

BGS have received a number of reports from residents in the Herefordshire area of a felt event this evening at 18:06 UTC. Felt reports described "a thump as if someone had jumped off the bed upstairs" and "loud boom noise as though something extremely heavy had fallen on the wood floor above my head". The strength of the shaking has been described as moderate, enough to make furniture shake and windows and crockery rattle. Some reports indicate that people were woken from sleep and a few were frightened, indicating an intensity of at least 4 EMS.
Today's event locates approximately 17 km southeast of a magnitude 2.4 ML earthquake which occurred on 17 September 1993.
Historicaly, the largest earthquake to have occurred in this area was a magnitude 5.3 event on 17 December 1896.
