SEISMIC ALERT: MINAHASA, SULAWESI, INDONESIA 16 NOVEMBER 2008 17:02 UTC 7.5 Mw
Latest reports indicate that at least two people have been killed, around 40 others injured and many buildings destroyed by this earthquake. An advanced warning of the earthquake was issued moments before it struck. An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a tsunami and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii quickly issued a warning after the earthquake occurred, however, it was cancelled shortly after. This event locates approximately 3000 km east of the magnitude 8.7 earthquake which occurred off the coast of western Sumatra on 26 December 2004, causing a tsumani and killing 250,000 people.
The following preliminary information is available for this earthquake:
DATE : 16 November 2008
ORIGIN TIME : 17:02 32s UTC
LAT/LONG : 1.289? North / 122.102? East
DEPTH : 26.0 km
MAGNITUDE : 7.5 Mw
LOCALITY : 135 km northwest of Gorontalo, Sulawesi, Indonesia
A seismicity map of the region and seismograms will follow shortly.
