GENERAL BULLETIN INFORMATION
STATION INSTRUMENTATION
The Red Sismica del Noroeste de Mexico (RESNOM) is a telemetry
network maintained in operation by the Department of Seismology
of the Earth Sciences Division of CICESE. The network collects
digital information from local and regional earthquakes of north
Baja California and the western Sonora region. Effective seismic
monitoring of the network began in June 1980.
RESNOM consists in 12 short-period stations (1-sec), 3 broadband
stations (0.01-50 Hz), and one long-period station (15-sec). The
seismic signals detected by the short-period Teledyne (S 500) or
Mark L4C instruments are digitized in-situ at a rate of 40 sps.
The digitized signals are serialized and coded in FSK
(Frequency Shift Keying), and transmitted in real time
(via VHF and UHF radio links) to the processing center in Ensenada,
Baja California.
The broadband stations began operating by the end of the year 2001.
Those stations are equipped with Reftek 24-bit digital recorders
(DAS 72A) and Geotech tri-axial sensors (KS-2000). The seismic
signals are digitized at a rate of 100 sps and sent to CICESE using
a transmission system that combines radio links and Internet.
The only long-period station that operates as part of the RESNOM
system is located in the basement of the Earth Sciences building at
CICESE. This station operates with Teledyne Geotech seismometers
(Model 7505 and 8700) coupled to a digital recording system that was
designed in the RESNOM laboratory. In this case, the signals are
digitized at 1 sps on each channel.
HYPOCENTER LOCATIONS
Since July 2002, data recorded by RESNOM are processed with SeisAn,
a software package for earthquake data analysis (Havskov and Ottemoller, 1999).
The preliminary hypocenter determinations are obtained with the program
HYPOCENTER (Lienert and Havskov, 1995), which is part of the SeisAn
package. A crust composed of plane parallel layers is assumed for
locating the hypocenters of local and regional events. Two velocity
models are used in the location process, one for the Mexicali Valley
(MV) and one for the Peninsular Ranges of Baja California (PRBC). A
modified version of a model by McMechan and Mooney (1980)for the
Imperial Valley is used to locate events of MV. For earthquakes of PRBC,
the velocity model proposed by Nava and Brune (1983) is used. These
velocity models are given in the tables that follow.

MAGNITUDE CALCULATIONS
Magnitudes are calculated from coda duration and/or amplitudes. The coda
wave magnitude is estimated with the formula (Gonzalez and Garcia, 1986):
Mc = -0.85 + 2.24 * log10(T)
where T is the coda duration (in sec). This relationship is used with
data from stations RDX, PBX, ECX and ENX, which are located in PRBC.
If instrument-corrected peak amplitudes A are available
(Synthetic Wood-Anderson amplitudes, nm), local magnitudes ML are calculated
by the following formulae (Vidal and Munguia, 1999):
ML= log(A) + 1.0134 * log10(r/100)+ 0.0025 * (r-100) + 3.0
for earthquakes recorded in the sedimentary environment of MV, and
ML= log(A) + 1.1319 * log10(r/100)+ 0.0017 * (r-100) + 3.0
for earthquakes recorded in PRBC. In these empirical relationships r is
the hypocentral distance (in km).
Station corrections are applied to the local magnitudes to take into account
the site effects at each recording site (Vidal and Munguia, 1999). The
station corrections available to date are included in the table that
contains information related to the RESNOM stations.

SP13 used in this bullettin are the components Z, N, E of stations
CBX, CPX and SPX, respectively.
For stronger events, time readings from other networks or cooperating
agencies are ussually combined with the RESNOM data for hypocenter
determinations. Then, data from stations of the Red de Acelerografos
del Noroeste de Mexico (RANM), a strong-motion network that CICESE
operates in the region, or time readings from the Southern California
Network, operated jointly by the California Institute of Technology and
the United States Geological Survey, are commonly used.
ABBREVIATIONS
TIME: Origin time in UTC (hr. min. and sec.) or data file onset time
if event is not located.
LAT: Latitude of epicenter.
LON: Longitude of epicenter.
DEPTH: Focal depth in kilometers (trailing F indicates fixed depth)
AGENCY: Hypocenter reporting agency.
MAGNITUDES: Up to 3 different magnitudes can be given followed by type and
reporting agency, e.g. 3.1 MC RES - coda magnitude
calculated with RESNOM data.
RMS: Root mean square value of travel time residuals.
STAT: Station code.
CO: Component, S:short period, L:long period, B:broadband.
DIST: Epicenter distance (km).
AZI: Azimuth from source to station.
PHAS: Phase; The first letter characterizes onset E(emergent) or
I(impulsive).
P: Polarity (C for compression, D for dilatation).
HR: Hour.
MN: Minute.
SECON: Seconds.
TRES: Residual (seconds).
CODA: Signal duration in seconds.
AMPL: Ground Amplitude (0.5*(peak to peak amplitude)) (nm) at period PERI.
PERI: Period where amplitude is measured.
BAZ: Back azimuth (station to event).
ARES: Back azimuth residual.
VELO: Apparent phase velocity (km/sec).
WT: Weight of phase in the location.
*: An asterix before the phase arrival time implies a potential
timing error. If an S phase is read, differential S-P times
will be used in the hypocenter location.
