This is the largest earthquake on mainland Britain in almost 10 years, since C3
the magnitude 5.2 ML Market Rasen earthquake on 27 February 2008. The C3
earthquake occurred in a part of south Wales that has been struck by a C3
number of other significant earthquakes in the last few hundred years. A C3
magnitude 5.2 ML earthquake in 1906 was one of the most damaging British C3
earthquakes of the 20th Century, with damage to chimneys and walls reported C3
from Kidwelly to Cardiff. Earthquakes with magnitudes of 5.2 and 5.1 C3
occurred near Swansea in 1727 and 1775 respectively.BGS received C3
reports of the earthquake being felt from several thousand people. The C3
maximum observed intensity was 5 EMS, which corresponds to strong shaking. C3
The earthquake was felt over much of Wales and southwest Britain. An C3
earthquake of this size occurs somewhere on mainland Britain roughly every 4 C3
years. In 2014, a magnitude 4.1 earthquake occurred in the Bristol Channel C3
and was widely felt in south Wales and Devon. C3

Todays earthquake occurred at 07:33 UTC with a magnitude of 3.4 ML. The C3
epicentre was approximately 5 km SSE of Cockermouth and 12 km ENE of C3
Workington. We have received over 130 reports of the earthquake being felt, C3
most of them from people living close to the epicentre and in the nearby C3
towns of Whitehaven and Workington. The intensity of the shaking was C3
generally weak or moderate, enough to cause windows and objects to rattle. C3
No damage is expected from an earthquake of this size. This is the C3
largest earthquake in Cumbria since a magnitude 3.5 ML earthquake on 21 C3
December 2010 near Coniston. In 2009 there was a magnitude 3.9 earthquake C3
near Ulveston that was felt widely. The region has experienced many C3
earthquakes over the past few hundred years. The largest of these was a C3
magnitude 5 earthquake near Whitehaven in 1786. This caused some minor C3
damage in Barrow, Cockermouth, Egremont, Whitehaven and Worthington. C3
