Sorry for causing the problem. Actually it must have been a matter of clicking
because
I have sent you KSPxall0607.txt instead of KSPxall0608.txt. My hand must have
moved
when clicking for the attachment files and then I haven't noticed the "7"
instead of "8" in
the filename.
Przemek Kowalski has told me he is about ready to go to you next week, so let me
give you this last minute advice on him:
- He works better when he has a score of tasks pointed out in order rather than
have
fewer tasks but having to figure out himself what is the right order of doing
them.
- When he learns new tasks, at the beginning sometimes he forgets about one or
two
small issues - until he learns this the hard way. Then there is a period when he
works
fine and when it seems he has mastered the job you give him some new data that
differs from the data he handled before, hoping he will handle it with his
experience.
It happens then that instead of coming to you and asking questions, Przemek
tries
to make an invention of his own and then it is 50-50 chance the invention will
be
useful or a disaster.
- Przemek has a big experience in phase picking and bulletin processing as we do
it
in Poland. However, what you do at ISC differs. We have our strange Polish
habits
that Przemek thinks are seismology standard whereas we are more of an exception
than a rule. Take this into account as to avoid misunderstandings when teaching
him.
- Set up clear rules with Przemek, so should he use a desktop-pc for private
email
or private internet browsing, the rules should say e.g. he can do that the first
30
minutes after coming to work, then during lunchtime and then after hours. This
is
as so he does get dragged in and distracted from his true job. You may tell him
that you have regular audit and occasional check of internet browser's
"history",
even if this is not true.
- Cars, especially of the sport-utility-vehicle or all-terrain-vehicle type are
Przemek's
hobby, even though until now he had no money to get one here - actually he once
did buy a Rusian UAZ (something similar to a jeep) but it was old and had its
engine
in bad shape - burned some 30 liters of fuel per 100 km on the road so it costed
a fortune to drive it - ultimately he couldn't get it through the annual
technical check
and had to scrap it. Anyway, cars are maybe more than his hobby and better if
neither you nor other ISC staff lets themselves be drawn into discussion on cars
because this is one subject that Przemek can talk on endlessly.
In Przemek's case the fascination with cars seems to be a sort of family
tradition.
His great-grandpa had some sort of mechanical workshop in Warsaw before World
War 2. The workshop has been destroyed in the Warsaw Uprising and then the
premises were nationalized by the communists. Przemek's dad was an engineer and
worked as constructor at the "State Institute of Motorization" that designed
strange
cars known only on this side of the Iron Curtain. Most of these cars have never
gone into production as it was cheaper to buy a licence for a car from Fiat than
to develop production lines of our own. Nevertheless some versions have been
produced in short series, e.g. the Fiat 125-limousine (with an extra compartment
added and three doors to a side). After 1989 Przemek's dad has started a car
repair shop business of his own, but then around 1997 he became ill and died
about 5 years later. However, although so much fascinated, Przemek is not an
expert in car repair. I would say he is a theoretician in this - usually he
diagnoses
correctly the technical problem but better not let him repair: he will do it but
eventually something other is likely to fail because of his repair...
