Since October 1st, one bi-monthly issue of the Bulletin was published and distributed. It contained the data for 1995 July-August and included the hypocentres and associated observations for 9,650 events. The master copy of the Bulletin for 1995 September-October was sent to press. It contained the data for 12,915 earthquakes.
The most noteworthy events in this period were the two most powerful occurring on the coast of Mexico. The first in 1995 September 14th caused much damage and some fatalities in Guerrero and the second on October 9th also caused much damage in Colima and Jalisco. 1995 October was a very active month with additional large destructive events in Turkey on October 1st and in Ecuador on October 3rd, both followed by significant aftershock sequences. Other damaging events occurred in Southern Sumatera on 1995 October 6th, in the Ryukyu Islands on 1995 October 18th and in Yunnan, China on 1995 October 23rd.
The input data were assembled for the data months 1995 November and December amounting to a total of 428,000 records and editing has begun. The most powerful earthquake in this period occurred in the Kuril Islands on December 3rd being felt extensively in Japan and causing a tsunami. This event was preceded by major foreshocks on November 24th and December 2nd. Another destructive earthquake on November 22nd occurred at the northern end of the Gulf of Aqaba affecting Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
The input data for 1995 September and October were assembled for the next issue, that for 1995 July-December.
This series ceased to be compiled from the end of 1995. Records for the historical bibliography for 1956 were checked and corrected.
The grant from the US National Science Foundation for a new computer system was received and SUN Microsystems have delivered the initial two Ultra workstations, a disk storage pack and a DLT backup device. The delayed Russian contribution for 1996 was received.
Ms Alison Bird formerly of University of Victoria and the Pacific Geoscience Centre, British Columbia, Canada joined the ISC to help with the data editing. The Director, Anthony Hughes retires at the end of 1997 but will continue at ISC on a part-time basis into 1998. Raymond Willemann, the new Director, arrives on January 5th.
