Description: | The main research lines of the Instituto Andaluz de Geofmsica are centred on the seismological knowledge of the Betic Cordilleras and surrounding areas (Alboran Sea), an active continental boundary of the Euroasian plate in contact with African plate, and where a number of destructive and damaging earthquakes have occurred in the past centuries. Within this objective, studies on spatial and temporal seismicity, seismo-tectonics, focal mechanisms and source parameters, seismic attenuation, wave velocity tomography, surface wave dispersion, local site response and seismic zonation and microzonation have carried out. Another active lines of work are volcanic seismicity (Antarctic and Italian volcanoes), shallow geophysical exploration (for example applied to archaeology) and seismic instruments development. |
