Description: | The National Institute for Meteorology and Geophysics (INMG, Cape Verde) is a public institute with about 100 employees, which has as main mission both the meteorological and geophysical monitoring. In this context, INMG is the official informer of the authorities, the Government and all stakeholders, including the Civil Protection Service, on any anomalous (meteorological or geophysical) phenomena that may occur. Its meteorological monitoring consists of publishing hourly as well as 24/24hr weather reports for both civil aviation and civil protection proposes. Additionally, the institute monitors climate evolution and air quality. As far as the geophysical monitoring is concerned, due to the volcanic origin of the Cape Verde archipelago, INMG issues alerts of eruptions or other geological associated hazard to the authorities. To achieve this mission, INMG has developed, installed and runs a seismic and ground deformation monitoring network, aiming at volcanic early warning and hazard mitigation of the volcanic active islands in Cape Verde - Fogo, Brava and S. Ant?o. Furthermore, INMG is surveying the others islands which did not erupt recently, in order to detect any very early sign of volcanic reawakening. Currently, the network consists of seventeen seismic stations distributed in 6 of the 9 inhabited islands, and three tilt stations installed at Fogo Volcano. The data produced by the geophysical network is telemetered and analysed in real time. In addition to the volcano monitoring, the data is also being for research. |
