Description: | Seismological Observatory of KOERI has been monitoring earthquakes in Turkey since 1926. The first station was a mechanical Mainka seismograph installed in Istanbul Kandilli Station-ISK. KOERI's seismic stations started to be a network in the early 1970's with the installation conventional seismic stations in Western Turkey. 1978 was the year that MARNET radio-linked stations started to be installed in the Marmara region. At present, 9 stations provide real time data. KOERI started to expand its network throughout Turkey in 1993 with the installation of modern on-line and dial-up seismic stations. Today, The Seismological Observatory of KOERI operates a total of 46 seismic stations. In addition, a so-called alpha station located at Belbasi in Ankara will be operated by KOERI after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Turkish Government and US Government for global seismic monitoring according to the issue of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) under the auspices of the Conference of Disarmament, UN, Geneva. The seismological division of KOERI determines, as rapidly and accurately as possible, the location and size of all earthquakes of magnitude larger than 3.5 that occur in the country. It provides a twenty-four hour information service to government agencies and public information centers. The data are also disseminated to relevant international seismological centers such as NEIC, ISC, ESC and to universities through fax and internet. A seismic data base which contains a catalog of data and waveform data is being provided to researchers and scientists. Wednesday, is an open day for student and public education and training. |
