Description: | In 1987 Albin Belar started seismology in Slovenia and established in Ljubljana the first seismological station in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. That was two years after the disastrous earthquake that struck the town of Ljubljana in 1895. He was the editor of a scientific periodical called \"Die Erdbebenwarte\" which was published in Ljubljana at the beginning of the century (1901-1910), and the responsible reporter for a network of seismic observers in Dalmatia. During the Second World War all the recordings disappeared. After the Second World War there were no operating seismic station is Slovenia until 1959 when the Wiechert seismograph started to operate within the Astronomical and Geophysical Observatory on Golovec hill in Ljubljana (LJU). The second seismic station had been brought into operation in Gori?ice near Cerknica lake (CEY). The first digital seismic station was put into operation in 1990. In 1996 the network was upgraded to 6 digital stations. From 2001 to 2006 it was continuously upgraded to current number of 26 stations. The Seismic network of the Republic of Slovenia (SNRS) is a state-wide permanent digital broad-band seismic network operated by Slovenian Environment Agency (ARSO). Most of them are six channel stations equipped with broad-band seismometre (STS-2 or Guralp) and accelerometre (Episensor). All data are received in real-time at the ARSO data centre located in Ljubljana. The main purpose of the network is to continuously monitor the seismicity of Slovenia and worldwide and to provide high quality data for the seismological and geodynamic scientific research. |
