Description: | The MELT experiment was the first passive seismic experiment to provide extensive temporal and spatial coverage to characterize the seismicity at the superfast-spreading Southern East Pacific Rise (SEPR). The SEPR is different from other ridge segments in many aspects, most noticeably in morphology, gravity, and common existence of magma chamber. The study will provide a valuable comparison to earthquake activities at the slow-, intermediate-, and fast-spreading ridges. This comparison is fundamental to our understanding of the influence of spreading rate on the magmatic, tectonic, and hydrothermal processes of mid-ocean ridges. |
