Description: | Earthquakes in Canada are monitored by the Pacific Division of the Geological Survey of Canada from offices in Ottawa ON and Sidney BC. The goal of the National Earthquake Hazards Program is to understand the causes of, and hazards associated with earthquakes in Canada. This program provides input to the National Building Code of Canada, which provides engineering guidelines for construction appropriate to the earthquake hazard of any given region. Data from the network of nearly 100 seismograph stations is forwarded to dual datacentres for immediate use and archived for future study. Staff locate, catalogue and study over 1500 earthquakes in Canada each year. Research is carried out in a wide range of earthquake related studies including seismic hazard, strong motion seismology, earthquakes source studies, seismotectonics, and earth structure. Another component of the National Earthquake Hazards Program involves careful measurement of ongoing deformation of the Earth's crust. This is the principal activity of the geodynamics group in the Sidney office. As part of Canada's contribution to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty the Ottawa group provides seismic data to the International Monitoring System which measures compliance with the treaty. |
