Description: | The Seismology Research Centre (SRC) was established in 1976. Its work is primarily concerned with the measurement and analysis of vibrations, particularly those due to earthquakes. The SRC has a staff of about a dozen working in seismology, instrumentation and software development. The SRC has offices in Melbourne, Victoria and Brisbane, Queensland. Equipment and Analysis SoftwareThe SRC has been developing digital seismographs and drum recorders since 1977. SRC digital seismographs have been installed in over 300 locations throughout Australia, and in Asia and the Pacific. The SRC has also developed suites of software for operating a seismograph network. These programs include determination of earthquake location and magnitude, realtime event location and alarm generation, and a program that provides earthquake preparation, alarm and response information.Earthquake Preparation, Alarm and ResponseThe SRC has developed a system to provide alarm, damage scenario and response information after moderate or large earthquakes. An automatic paging system is used to alert staff immediately after such earthquakes are recorded. Reports are rapidly generated and provided to authorities by phone, fax or other means. The reports contain information about the earthquake, descriptions of the likely effects on the authority's assets, and a list of tasks to be undertaken.Seismograph Network OperationThe SRC operates a network of approximately 80 seismographs and accelerographs in Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania. It locates about 300 earthquakes within this network each year (see the maps for examples). Most of these earthquakes are too small to be felt, but provide useful seismological information. Most of the instruments are operated for owners of large dams, power stations or other large infrastructure, with the SRC providing routine operation, maintenance, analysis of data, and preparation of routine reports. |
